Raw Fleece

Four breeds graze CRØFT 22's 18 acres. Each spring, after shearing, we make a small batch of their raw fleece available to hand-spinners, natural dyers, and fibre artists.

We skirt and roll each fleece by hand. No washing, no processing, just the wool as it came off the animal, ready for you to prepare the way you prefer.

The breeds

Hebridean

The purest of our flock. A double coat: coarser outer kemp for weatherproofing, softer inner fibres for spinning. Rich black, occasionally dark brown. Rustic character and real longevity. Ideal for outerwear, bags, rugs, and anything that needs to last.

Shetland

Finer and more lustrous. Natural colours range from near-white to moorit (warm chocolate) and grey. One of the most versatile spinning fleeces in Britain. Works beautifully for fine knitwear and Fair Isle-weight projects.

Suffolk Cross Shetland

A cross that combines Shetland's fineness with a bit more staple length. A good all-purpose spinning fleece, holds dye well, spins consistently, suits both woollen and worsted preparation.

Scottish Blackface

The coarser end of our flock. Hardy, distinctive, with a long staple. Best for chunky spins, outerwear yarns, and projects that want visible character over softness. The wool of crofts and hill farms across Scotland for centuries.

Croft-colour editions

Each year we set aside a small quantity of fleece and dye it in the two signature CRØFT 22 colours, a deep teal and a warm rose, using plant-based methods. These sell out quickly and are only available immediately after shearing season. Get in touch early if you'd like to be notified.

Availability

Fleece is sheared once a year, typically in April or May, depending on the weather and the readiness of the flock. We announce availability through our Field Notes and to people who've enquired in advance. If you'd like to be on the list, drop us a message.
