We send our Hebridean fleece south to The Border Mill, a small family-run processor outside Edinburgh. They've been turning Scottish fleeces into quality yarn for decades. We trust them with ours because they care about where the wool comes from.

The result is a yarn with genuine provenance: one croft, one island, one processor. No blending with anonymous bulk fleece. No outsourcing the awkward bits. What goes in is what comes out, just in a form you can knit, weave, or crochet with.

Character

Hebridean wool is not the softest yarn you'll ever work with. That's the point. It's hardwearing, resilient, and full of character, qualities the breed had to develop to survive on the Outer Hebrides in weather that would ruin a Merino. Over time, with wear and washing, Hebridean yarn softens considerably while keeping its structure.

It's the right yarn for things that need to last: outerwear, bags, home textiles, hard-wearing knitwear. Not the right yarn if you're looking for next-to-skin softness on day one. We'd rather tell you that now.

Colourways

Hebridean sheep are naturally dark, black through to dark brown and the occasional moorit. We don't dye the yarn to change it; we let the natural variation of the flock speak. Each year's batch has its own character depending on which animals were sheared and the particular season they lived through.

We also produce a small run of croft-colour yarn (teal and rose) dyed using plant-based methods at The Border Mill. These are limited and announced through our Field Notes when available.
