One animal. One rug. No two the same.

These rugs begin with the flock. Two-horned Hebridean sheep (an ancient breed, RBST listed, native to the Outer Hebrides) living out full lives on 18 acres of Great Bernera. The rug is what happens after.

We send our skins to the Welsh Organic Tannery, one of the few remaining tanneries in Britain using certified-organic, vegetable-based tanning: no chrome, no bleach, no shortcuts. The process takes time. The result is a rug that ages honestly.

What makes each rug different

Hebridean sheep are naturally dark, deep black through to dark brown and the occasional moorit (a warm chocolate). No dyeing, no bleaching. The colour you see is the colour the animal grew. Because every sheep is an individual, every rug is too: different in size, in the density and fall of the wool, in the particular markings on the skin.

We can tell you what year a rug came from. For animals we've named, we can tell you considerably more than that.

Caring for your rug

Shake regularly. Air outdoors when you can. If it gets wet, dry slowly away from direct heat. Vegetable-tanned leather needs time, not warmth. If it gets dirty, spot-clean with cold water and a small amount of wool wash. No washing machines. No radiators. Treat it like the natural object it is and it will last decades.
